ADSP 21061 EZ-Kit Lite License

I have recently acquired an old ADSP-21061 EZ-KIT Lite board and have come to realize that neither VisualDSP++ 3.5 or 5 can establish debug sessions to anything other than the simulator. Version 3.5 can identify the ez-kit lite as a platform in the Configurator however once you open VisualDSP only simulation is possible.  If I'm not mistaken, I require a special ez-kit lite license in order to use the serial based on-board emulator. Is there any chance to get a serial number for this kit?

Thanks,

Mike

  • Hi Mike,

On VisualDSP++ 3.5 the Test Drive license provides a 90-day test drive of all sessions - Simulator, Emulator, and EZ-KIT Lite (this changed in VisualDSP++ 4.0 when Test Drives were limited to just Simulator and Emulator).

By comparison, in VisualDSP++ 3.5, the Evaluation License - provided with an EZ-KIT Lite - enables only the EZ-KIT Lite session, but does so permanently (again, this changed in VisualDSP++ 4.0 when Evaluation Licenses provided all 3 sessions for 90 days, before being limited to just the EZ-KIT Lite sessions).

So, if you have a valid Test Drive License or Full license, you should be able to connect to your 21061 EZ-KIT Lite session. To do so, please follow this procedure:

Go to 'Start: Programs: Analog Devices: VisualDSP++ 3.5 for 32-Bit Processors: VisualDSP++ Configurator'

Double-click on "ADSP-21061 EZ-KIT Lite via COM port", set any parameters you need to, then click 'OK'.

You should see it listed in the 'Platforms' column on the right.

    Close the Configurator.

Now when you start VisualDSP++ 3.5, and go to 'Session: New Session'. Select "Sharc Emulators/EZ-KITs" as the Debug Target, then you should see your "ADSP-21061 EZ-KIT Lite via COM port" session in the 'Platform' drop-down.

I can't provide an evaluation license serial number on the public forum, however I should advise that your EZ-KIT Lite should have come with a CD of the VisualDSP++ tools. I appreciate you inherited an old EZ-KIT, so may not have this, but if you do the serial number is printed on the CD sleeve. If you are unable to locate the serial number, you should contact private support through the link below; they may be able to provide a serial number.

  • Hi Mike,

Thanks, if you contact private support we should be able to send you a serial number and determine if the problem is related to the type of license installed. If not, we can work with you from there and post the outcome here once the issue is resolved.

    Craig.

  • Hi Craig,

Thanks for the quick reply. I was using the same procedure you've posted in my attempts to get this running. The "Configurator" portion of the process works, I can select the ""ADSP-21061 EZ-KIT Lite via COM port" and save the config. Unfortunately, this device does not show up in the "New Session" Dialog within VisualDSP++3.5. I will go ahead and try my luck with the support team to see if they can help me out with an EZ-KIT serial number.

  • Hi Gary,

I contacted support. The official last release to support the 21061 EZ-KIT Lite over the serial port  was 3.0 and as it's a legacy product with limited support they could not send me a copy of the 3.0 Installer with an EZ-KIT license. They were able to get me a test drive license for 5.0 so I could use it in the simulator. Although that's not what I was looking for I'm happy they responded to the ticket considering the age of the product. They mentioned that the USB-ICE is supported in 5.0 w/ the 21061 so there's always that option but I'd likely purchase a newer SHARC EZ-KIT before perusing that option.

The ADI FTP site does contain an old dos based version of the 21061 C compiler and assembler along with a windows based executable called EZSHARC which can upload compiled code to the board over serial. This compiler creates coff binaries so I imagine I can compile code/simulate in VDSP5.0 and then convert the ELF .DXE files to coff format using elf2coff.exe which shipped with VDSP2.0.

    Thanks for all the help,

    Mike Wolak

  • HI Mike,

My apologies; I had tested it briefly enough to ensure the session was created, and I could select it through the New Session wizard, but had not located an old 21061 EZ-KIT to test the connection. While the session is available, it appears this is an oversight and, as private support advised you, the 21061 COM port session cannot be activated in VisualDSP++ 3.5.

The solution above - using elf2coff from 2.0 - may work, however it may not support the full ELF format in VisualDSP++ 5.0, which differs from the ELF format used in older tools. There is an ELF to COFF utility provided in VisualDSP++ 5.0 that should be a better option.

    Craig.

  • Hi Craig,

We recently purchased ADSP-21061 EZ-KIT Lite and ICE-1000 since several our products are still use ADSP-21061 chips.

But I found the JTAG J5 Pin7 on ADSP-21061 EZ-KIT Lite board is connected to Vdd, and ICE-1000 J1-7 is connected to GND. So I have to remove Vdd from Pin7. Then I can download the code with very slow response and intermittent connection.  Do you know if here is any configuration requirement for EBOOT and LBOOT pins, or some jumper setting I need to change?

    Thanks for help!
