I'm a ChemE with little-to-no hardware experience but I'm intrigued by the E2B 10Base-T1S transceiver for automotive (i.e. the AD3300 series).  I like the E2B notion of keeping SPE node cost low and eventually moving to industrial Ethernet sensors & actuators - so I wonder why this idea wouldn't translate to industrial automation where there are millions of I/O modules for 4-20mA sensors and actuators.  Proprietary single-channel DCS/PLC I/O modules can cost hundreds of dollars each and some large plants have 30-40k field devices.  Crazy idea?
