2008-10-01 06:33:31     Problem when booting u-boot.1.1.6 on BF561 ezkit

I know these are many other threads with a similar problem to mine, but I have spent days trying to track down what my problem might be, to no avail!

I have uploaded the uboot image to flash using VDSP/usb connectivity. The switches are all set as described in the manuals, and I have confirmed that they are correct using other forum posts. However, when the ez kit board is turned on, I get nothing in HyperTerminal - leading me to believe that either it hasnt booted correctly, or there is a problem with the serial connection.

I have tried different combinations of SW3 switches, just in case, but that isn't the problem.

I have loaded one of the example programs from VDSP (the simple led flashing program) into flash memory and that successfully boots.

I have probed the UART pins with an oscilloscope and it all seems ok :/

What could possibly be the problem?

Thanks in advance for any information!

John Redford.

what u-boot image file exactly have you flashed ?  if you halt the processor with JTAG, where is the PC ?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I have tried flashing it with the following:

u-boot-cm-bf561-para-2008R1.5.ldr

u-boot-bf561-ezkit-para-2008R1.5.ldr

u-boot-bf561-ezkit-bypass-2008R1.5.bin but none of them work.

I do not use JTAG to connect to the ez kit - I use the usb connection with VDSP. (To flash it) I then conenct the serial cable before booting (to uboot) and expect to see the status in HyperTerminal.

Thanks again,

John Redford.

dont go just picking any random file that has "561" in it and flashing it.  we have documentation already that explains how to select the proper file:

http://docs.blackfin.uclinux.org/doku.php?id=bootloaders:u-boot:release-notes:2008r1.5#deliverables

http://docs.blackfin.uclinux.org/doku.php?id=bootloaders:u-boot:compiling#binaries

once you've picked the correct file, make sure your boot mode pins are set properly:

http://docs.blackfin.uclinux.org/doku.php?id=hw:boards:bf561-ezkit

Well, at first I was careful to select the correct file. The switch and jumper settings are all correct. When it repeatedly failed to boot u-boot, I decided to try the other loader files which were associated with my board. All unsuccessful.

When i boot, nothing happens at all. (well LED6 is on if that is any use.)

Could the board be faulty? I have probed the Tx pin of the UART port during bootup and there is no signal. Does this mean that uboot isnt successfully booting or does it mean there is a problem with the UART port?

I am completely new to this and so I am finding troubleshooting pretty difficult.

Cheers,

John Redford.

John:

What version of EZKit do you have? What version of silicon is on the board? If it is too old - it's not going to work.

As Mike pointed you to - you should be using:

http://blackfin.uclinux.org/gf/download/frsrelease/395/4887/u-boot-bf561-ezkit-bypass-2008R1.5.bin

They work (or they do on the hardware we have access to).

Once you set the bootmode properly, disconnect the VDSP USB cable - and hit the reset button (or better yet, power cycle), if you don't see things on the UART - that normally means something is not programmed properly...

Since we don't support VDSP - we may not be able to help much.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

It is the ADZS-BF561-EZLITE            -->  EZ-KIT LITE REV 2.3 (2007)

There is a sticker on the flash memory which says "1.5"

Im not sure what version of silicon is on the board, how can I find out? :/

Im going to try that binary, although I have a feeling I may already have tried it.

Yeah, unfortunately I have already tried that binary, and I saw nothing on the terminal. There is a hex file, u-boot_ezkit561-2006r2.hex which I think may be booting... because when I probe the Tx pin, it shows a signal. However nothing is sent to the terminal :/

Cheers,

Hi, just to let you know, it was the serial cable. I was almost certain that it was a straight serial cable, however, I used a multimeter to check the pin configuration, and sure enough... Tx and Rx were crossed! I cut the cable and rewired it. I now get messages on the terminal saying uboot has successfully loaded.

Thank goodness for that, it was driving me crazy!

Thanks for your help guys, this forum has been a great resource.

Glad that got things working.

my next suggestion was going to be to look at:

https://docs.blackfin.uclinux.org/doku.php?id=serial_cable
