2011-03-01 10:34:57     Kernel crash with 2010R1

Timur Aydin (TURKEY)

Message: 98506

Hi, I have a BF537-0.3 custom board with 64MBytes of memory. I was using 2008R1.5 on this system for a long time without seeing any kernel crashes. Now I switched over to 2010R1 and I am seeing a mysterious crash in the kernel. The crash log is below. In order to duplicate the problem, here is what I do:

- Let the system boot up and land in the command prompt. All device drivers are loaded and network is initialized, but none of my custom applications are run.

- Run a script that continuously reads "key=value" pairs from a text file in the serial terminal

- Do a flood ping to the system from another PC.

Within minutes, the kernel crashes with a null pointer access exception. As can be seen, the crash occurs in the lib/prio_tree.c file of the kernel. This seems to be memory management related. I experimented with using SLAB is the allocator instead of the default SLUB, but this didn't make any difference.

I can get the same problem to happen if I do this:

- Establish 4 telnet connections to the system and on all 4 terminals, run the script that continuously reads "key=value" pairs from a text file.

What can I do to further narrow down the problem? Any suggestions appreciated!

Hi Timur,

is this fairly reproducible?  Do you have examples of other traces that show the problem?

Do you print out any thing when running you read script in 4 telnet terminal?

What happen if you redirect all print out into /dev/null? still crash?

Yes, quite easily reproduced. In every crash, the fault location is the same, namely the prio_tree_replace function.

The scrips print the value of the "key=value pair".

Last night I left the system alone. It just booted up and landed on the shell prompt. No activity at all. This morning, it was crashed again. Same location, but the trace at the bottom (the user stack?) is different. Below, I included the whole screen capture, starting with the boot up and ending with the crash log:

I further narrowed it down by removing all custom code I added to the rc script. I just used the rc script as it is released for the AnalogDevices/BF537-STAMP version. Even with this configuration, I got a crash. But this time it is a little different. See the crash log at the end of the script.

Have you changed any configuration in kernel? Could you attach your kernel config file and your testing shell script file here?

Hi Timur,

I am trying to reproduce what you described. here is what I did: Boot up a BF537 EZ-kit with the 2010R1 release. From a PC I open four terminal and telnet to connect to the BF537 target board, on each of the foure terminal I read/write some text randomly, is this how you can reproduce your crash case? On my side it looks fine, no crash.

Or you can share me your test script that you are runing on each of the four telnet connection.

Ok guys, here is what I did:

I scrapped my existing kernel config, took the AnalogDevices/BF537-STAMP config and made my specific changes. With this config, the crash issue was resolved. I looked at the differences between my previous config and the new one and there were many differences. I think somehow the 2008R1.5 kernel config was used and it was updated with the new settings that came with 2010R1. Here is the diff between the previous (failing) config and the new config:

Hello Aaron,

Here is the script that I used. You basically create a text file:

----------------------------

TEST=1

----------------------------

and then run this on the serial terminal:

$ while true; do getcfg a.txt TEST; done

1

1

1

1

At the same time, you flood ping the blackfin from another host on the network, like this:

# ping -f -i 0 x.x.x.x

within an hour, I am getting a crash. I am sometimes getting a crash immediately, too. The crash seems to be mostly triggered by starting a new process. We first observed it with our product's web user interface, where CGI's were running every 3 seconds. Basically, whenever something is exec'd, the crash seemed to happen more often.

This is the shell script:

#!/bin/sh

# this script is used for parsing configuration files with "key=value"

# pairs. The first argument must be the file name and the second

# argument must be the key name whose value is sought.

if [ -z "$1" -o -z "$2" ]; then

    # missing arguments

    exit 1

fi

if [ ! -f "$1" ]; then

    # config file doesn't exist

    exit 2

fi

while read line

do

    key=`echo "$line" | awk -F= '{print $1}'`

    value=`echo "$line" | awk -F= '{print $2}'`

    if [ "x_$key" == "x_$2" ]; then

        # key found, print its value and return success

        echo "$value"

        exit 0

    fi

done < "$1"

if [ -n "$3" ]; then

    # write the default value specified and return success

    echo "$3"

    exit 0

else

    # no default exists, return error

    exit 3

fi

Hi Timur,

I had a try on the latest distribution SVN trunk. Open four telnet to the target bf537 stamp board:

telnet 10.99.23.93, then runing the script as you suggested: while true; do getcfg a.txt TEST; done

Then do flood ping from another PC to the target: ping -f -i - 10.99.23.93.   More than one hour passed and the telnet terminal are printing "1 1 1 1". So maybe you can have a try on the latest SVN trunk version?

Hi Aaron, did you test with a kernel that was built with the bad config I attached above?

When I started with the AnalogDevices/BF537-STAMP config and did my project specific customizations, I wasn't able to duplicate the problem. So, only the bad kernel config above triggers the crash...

I've taken a look at your config file, there are lines like "# CONFIG_BFIN537_STAMP is not set", so assume you are building a customized board and made some customization for the C code as well? In this case I will not be able to merge your change on the SVN trunk and try it on my side, sugest you to merge your customization to trunk as needed and have a try.
