In short: the event_test program still shows both events (release & hit). However, in an application /dev/tty0 only delivers the hit event as a key code. In another system I get the release event as a 2s-complement code. In that system, input_report_key() is used to report the event, while gpio_keys.c uses input_event().

 

Any hint how to establish this would be appeciated.

look into the kbd package and the ioctls it uses in linux/kd.h
