I am trying to use the libertas wifi driver on the 527 EZ-Kit through the SPI port.  What is the proper board and kernel configuration that should be used to make this work?

 

I am using the 2009 R1 snapshot and have followed the directions in the sdio_wifi patch as well as the document regarding SPI MMC driver at http://docs.blackfin.uclinux.org/doku.php?id=linux-kernel:drivers:spi_mmc.  I cannot get the board to recognize the device as a new card.  Everything goes as expected, but I do not get the message "mmc0: new SDIO card at address 0001"

 

What advice can you give me to proceed troubleshooting?

We are using a Marvell 8686 based module from Murato.  This exact configuration with the 527 ezkit was demonstrated as functional to us by a group from ADI, so I am certain that it should work.

 

I have included the output from dmesg and a patch file I made representing the changes I made to /linux-2.6.x/arch/blackfin/mach-bf527/boards/ezkit.c.

the MMC/SPI driver does not always detect card insertions properly.  you can try removing/inserting while the system is running.

Yes, we have tried that several times.  We get the usual two warning messages about the requested mode not being supported and the failure to change polarity:

 

mmc_spi spi0.2: requested mode not fully supported

mmc_spi spi0.2: can't change chip-select polarity

 

but, nothing more after that.

 

Originally, we were told that the chip select should be connected to PF8.  But this confuses me as only values of 0-7 are accepted in the .chip_select member of bfin_spi_board_info[].  I think that the problem may have to do with a mismatch between chip select value in my board configuration and the hardware, but I am not certain how to debug this.

dont worry about that warning, it's harmless.  it does show that things are being detected though, so that's good.

 

the chip select field is not defined in terms of pins, it's in terms of spi chipselects.  the HRM for every Blackfin variant shows the bindings between specific pins (PF8) and the spi chipselect.

Could you enable "CONFIG_MMC_DEBUG" option then run "dmesg", you can find the details of mmc-spi error.

 

I think you 8686 wifi module is using SPI, not SDIO, right? If your 8686 module is using SDIO, I don't think you can make it work using mmc-spi driver. You can connect your module to SPI port, without the mmc-spi in between, if your module is using SPI.

 

Another issue is that, we've tried to test spi-mmc on BF527-ezkit, via SPI connect P9. However, there is a pull-down resistor R25 on SPISCK, which prevents spi-mmc work properly.
