i can't find the source of uClibc in Release-dist-2008R1.5-RC3.tar.bz2.

how would it be compiled and integrated into the romfs?

uClibc is part of the toolchain, not the uClinux-dist.

In my opinion we also need it at runtime.

would it be applicable to make a image without libc support?

I don't understand your comment.

the normal build process of the uClinux-dist finds everything in uClibc from the toolchain, and installs it from there.

You should have the libc set to "none" in the uClinux-dist build system.
