Chuck Lee (CANADA)

Message: 55943

I am loosing the ability to use the keyboard when booting my BF548 EZkit.  I am guessing it has something to do with my u-boot configuration.

Below is my inital boot log console screen.  The rest of the boot log appears on the LCD but when the final prompt arrives my keyboard is not working.  The EZkit Keypad is enabled but only for the numbers, enter and 2ND keys.  I have a serial cable connect to the EZKIT RS-232 connector and able to work with u-boot in the console screen.  I was expecting that the keyboard would continue to work even though the output is now on the LCD.

Have a look at your bootargs:

>Kernel command line: root=/dev/mtdblock0 rw earlyprintk=serial,uart0,57600 ip=192.168.1.155:192.168.1.152:192.168.f

That has no console=

a keyboard hooked up to a terminal emulator hooked up to a serial console will only send input to that serial console.  it will not send input to the virtual console running on the LCD.  this is by design.

if you want a keyboard to interact with the LCD, use a USB keyboard.  you may be able to get a serial keyboard to work on the UART, but we've never tried on the BF548-EZKIT.

Hi Mike,

Ideally I would use a USB keyboard to input commands with the LCD as the display.  I compile the kernel as default "AnalogDevices/BF548-EZKIT_default".  I assume I need to do some further configuration to enable the USB keyboard.  My keyboard is the Logitech MX3000 wirless keyboard and mouse.  I am connecting to the OTG connector with the Goldx cable converter to the USB keyboard.

Regards,

USB stuff is not enabled by default for the BF548-EZKIT.  we'll be fixing that.

you'll need to enable the host controller and the input layer.

OK, that makes sense.  I believe I have selected the right options using make menuconfig but I am still not connecting to a USB keyboard.  Can you provide any further detail on the options to select for a BF548 EZkit?

Chuck

Hi Mike,

I must be missing something?  I believe I have selected all the right setting but I still can't get the keyboard to work.  I even bought another wireless keyboard and mouse which I am connecting throught the BF548 EZkit supplied USB cable to the OTG connector.

We have already ansered your question. In your bootargs, you are telling the kernel not to have a console, and the complaining that you don't have a console. (See the irony).

"console="= needs to be set to something (sorry, I should have been more clear last time I answered). It can not be blank, as blank is null (no console).

The default U-Boot, should set it to something like : "console=tty0 console=ttyBF0,57600".

Hi Robin,

Thanks, I missed that point.  I now at least can use the console (minicom screen on my PC) with my debugging keyboard connected to my PC controlling uClinux.  I see boot messages on both the LCD and Minicom screen on the PC but the USB keyboard is still not working.  I included both console statements in my bootargs.

When the USB keyboard works should it operate the LCD console screen or double up as a keyboard for the Minicom screen on the PC?  I was assuming I would be working truely embedded with the USB controlling the LCD on the EZkit.  Can you clarify?

Thanks,

Chuck

you should enable USB debugging messages and then unplug / plug in the keyboard to make sure it is recognized.  a lot of USB keyboards have hubs built into them which means they will not work with the Blackfins.

the serial console is just that ... a serial device.  the USB keyboard would not interact with it in any way.

As Mike said, try some things like:

root:~> dmesg | grep -i usb

You should see some messages like:

usbcore: registered new interface driver usbfs

usbcore: registered new interface driver hub

usbcore: registered new device driver usb

musb_hdrc: USB Host mode controller at ffc03c00 using PIO, IRQ 82

drivers/hid/usbhid/hid-core.c: v2.6:USB HID core driver

root:~> lsusb -t

Bus#  1

`-Dev#   1 Vendor 0x0000 Product 0x0000

  `-Dev#   2 Vendor 0x046d Product 0xc517

If you didn't compile all the drivers into the kernel - they need to be modprobed.

root:~> lsmod

I am using menuconfig and selecting the items from the menus and I believe I have all the correct setting for USB HID.

I even tried a straight USB keyboard, not a combo wireless KB & M.

I looks to me that the Keyboard is not registering.

Hi Robin,

Sorry for the wild goose chase.  I now realized I had the wrong connector on the USB cable.  It's now working.

Thanks for the help.
