### Q

I need to measure inclination angle. If e.g. ADIS16209 or another accelerometersees non-linear acceleration during this measurement, will the inclination

angle be faulty?

### A

Tilt sensing is accomplished by measuring the amount of the gravity vector thatis reflected on an axis of the accelerometer. The underlying assumption in

inclination sensing with an accelerometer is that the only acceleration

stimulus is that associated with gravity.

Application note AN-1057 which is also available on Analog Devices website

discusses this in great detail.

The ADIS16209 can be used in conjunction with a gyroscope, such as the ADXRS290, to estimate tilt angle on a body that is experiencing linear acceleration. See Figure 2 in this article for a block diagram on this concept.
