LTSpice installs but does not run (Win11Pro, HP845 laptop)

Category: Software
Product Number: LT S
Software Version: 26.0.2

Hi,

I have an HP laptop model 845 running Windows 11 Pro. I am trying to replace an older LTSpice installation (v17.11) with v26.0.2. It installs using Powershell (admin level), but will not run after install.

I used the verbose option as suggested in another thread, my install command:

msiexec /i "C:\Users\mtarr\Desktop\Installer - 2026-05-14 v26.0.2\LTspice64.msi" /L*v C:\Users\mtarr\Desktop\MyAppInstall.log

I am including the install log. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Morty Tarr

  • Hi Mike,

Here's the process I used to install LTSpice v26.0.2:

    Logged in as user (mtarr)
Opened an elevated CMD window (admin rights)
input path the LTSpice64.msi file in CMD window.
    Hit return, installer started up.
    Selected Install for All Users
Everything finished as if nothing's wrong.
    Still in user account.
LTSpice shortcut has the admin symbol on it.
LTSpice would not run from user account.
    Switched to admin account.
    LTSpice runs from admin account.
I will try to upload the CBS log separately (in case it fails).
    Thank you for your help!

BTW: Are any attachments allowed? (I have the version that includes pictures that I would like to send - .pdf and .docx) - could convert to almost any allowed format.

Interesting. Have you tried installing without elevating? Or, can you not run an installer on that machine without elevating?

Have you tried "Server" install instead off "for all"?

Yes, best to zip them up and drag to this window.

  • Hi Mike,

I installed the server version today from the user account without elevating (just clicked on the .msi file for v26.0.2). Same result as before - it runs from the admin account but is blocked by the user account.

Is there a way to instantiate a run with a verbose log? It seems like something is blocking it from running in user mode. Also, please resend the correct usage of the verbose command for install, I could not locate the specific directions today.

Thank you for your patience with this. I bought this specific laptop last year to run LTSpice almost as fast as my desktop. I was using the outdated v17.11 at that time because I had to correlate results with previous work.

I have not tried to re-install v17, but there was no problem when I first installed it. The initial v26 install wiped it out.

  • Hi Mike,

I tried to re-install the older version 17.1.11 from the user account. It worked, I can run it from the user account - no issues.

So I'm thinking that something changed in the Windows installer since then.

I thought this would be a good datapoint.

  • Hi  ,

    msiexec /i "C:\MyPackages\LTspice64.msi" /L*V "C:\Logs\InstallerLog.log

LTspice 17.x could be the problem. I would suggest uninstalling it entirely, including removing Appdata\Roaming\LTspice.ini. I asked our install expert, and he suggests that the LTspice 17 ini is the likely problem.

Then, install LTspice 26 using the Server option:

    1. Login as admin
    2. Run install, but choose "Server". This process                                                                                                        will not work with "For All", or "For Me".
    3. Log out as Admin and login as local user
    4. Start LTspice. LTspice will look for the library files, and see that they need to be unzipped and it will do so, but in the local user's appdata.

    Let's see how that works.

  • Hi Mike,

This last one worked! I made sure to look for an LTSpice folder in appdata and user/documents folders. I also deleted everything I found naming LT Spice including the .ini files.

Shouldn't the uninstaller have cleaned this up?

Thank you for your time and effort on my behalf. I appreciate it.

  • I was able to run LTSpice v26.0.2 from the admin account and from the user account. The user account installed the library files just like you said it would.

  • Hi  ,

    Good news!

Yeah, the uninstaller unfortunately cannot clean up all past installs, and the .ini usually doesn't cause problems. Nevertheless, the case of going from v17 to 26 has shown to be problematic.
