LTSpice installs but does not run (Win11Pro, HP845 laptop)

Category: Software
Product Number: LT S
Software Version: 26.0.2

Hi,

I have an HP laptop model 845 running Windows 11 Pro. I am trying to replace an older LTSpice installation (v17.11) with v26.0.2. It installs using Powershell (admin level), but will not run after install.

I used the verbose option as suggested in another thread, my install command:

msiexec /i "C:\Users\mtarr\Desktop\Installer - 2026-05-14 v26.0.2\LTspice64.msi" /L*v C:\Users\mtarr\Desktop\MyAppInstall.log

I am including the install log. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Morty Tarr

  • Hi  ,

We'll look at the log, thanks.

I am trying to replace an older LTSpice installation (v17.11)

In the meantime, there is a chance this is the problem. Can you also send your LTspice.ini. It should be here: Property(C): AppDataFolder = C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\

Actually, can you search for all LTspice.ini files on your system, if there are others floating around?

  • Hi  ,

FYI. There are two reasons for LTspice "not to start" that cover most cases:

    • The .ini is corrupted
    • LTspice cannot find its libraries

    mike

  • Hi Mike,

At the location you suggested there were 2 files. I am attaching them both. I searched the rest of the C: drive and there are no other instances of ltspice, ini.

I'll try to install again, but I don't think we changed anything.

If I do fresh install on the C: drive as usual, how will LTSpice not find it's libraries? I suspect a permissions error somewhere.

    Thank you

    Morty

  • Hi  ,

I don't see anything strange there. It does look like it had to upgrade your .ini to unicode. Not unusual.

Can you list the exact steps you use to install. I.e.

    1. I logged in as Amin
    2. I installed and chose "Server" or "For me" or "For All"
    3. I logged out
    4. Logged in as me
    5. Tried to Start LTspice

Is this a new machine with files from old machine (that ran LTspice XVII)?

I can't find attach - so here's the data inline:

Zip any files you want to share and simply drag to the reply window.

  • Hi Mike,

Here's the process I used to install LTSpice v26.0.2:

    Logged in as user (mtarr)
Opened an elevated CMD window (admin rights)
input path the LTSpice64.msi file in CMD window.
    Hit return, installer started up.
    Selected Install for All Users
Everything finished as if nothing's wrong.
    Still in user account.
LTSpice shortcut has the admin symbol on it.
LTSpice would not run from user account.
    Switched to admin account.
    LTSpice runs from admin account.
I will try to upload the CBS log separately (in case it fails).
    Thank you for your help!

BTW: Are any attachments allowed? (I have the version that includes pictures that I would like to send - .pdf and .docx) - could convert to almost any allowed format.

Interesting. Have you tried installing without elevating? Or, can you not run an installer on that machine without elevating?

Have you tried "Server" install instead off "for all"?

Yes, best to zip them up and drag to this window.

  • Hi Mike,

I installed the server version today from the user account without elevating (just clicked on the .msi file for v26.0.2). Same result as before - it runs from the admin account but is blocked by the user account.

Is there a way to instantiate a run with a verbose log? It seems like something is blocking it from running in user mode. Also, please resend the correct usage of the verbose command for install, I could not locate the specific directions today.

Thank you for your patience with this. I bought this specific laptop last year to run LTSpice almost as fast as my desktop. I was using the outdated v17.11 at that time because I had to correlate results with previous work.

I have not tried to re-install v17, but there was no problem when I first installed it. The initial v26 install wiped it out.

  • Hi Mike,

I tried to re-install the older version 17.1.11 from the user account. It worked, I can run it from the user account - no issues.

So I'm thinking that something changed in the Windows installer since then.

I thought this would be a good datapoint.

  • Hi  ,

This might be a case where a screen share would do the trick. If you are willing, I will set it up.
