LTSpice won't work on my brand new windows 11 pro machine

Thread Summary

The user reports LTSpice not starting on a new Windows 11 Pro machine, despite successful installation and updates. The issue persists even after trying the 24.1.10 test version and running msiexec with verbose logging. The user's machine is not managed by an IT department, does not use OneDrive, and has an Intel Core Ultra 7 265 CPU and 16 GB RAM. The support engineer suggests sharing the verbose log file from the msiexec command to help diagnose the problem.

Hi LTSpice won't work on my brand new windows 11 pro machine. Program installs correctly and when I select LTspice updates it works and says "up to date" but when I try to start it even using "run as administrator nothing happens and I get no error message at all. Checking on Task manager there is no LTSpice active or even running in the background it's as if it just doesn't start or crashes upon start with no error messages.

I tried downloading regular LTSpice for windows 11 and even the one at https://LTspice.analog.com/download/24.1.10_test/LTspice64.msi instaling then running msiexec /i "<Path to>\LTspice64.msi" /L*v "<Path to>\MyAppInstall.log etc all to no avail. Ironically we purchased this 5.3GHz 18 core latest and greatest mostly for LTSpice which is the only app that won't work. We have downloaded other apps like Altium and acrobat reader, Google Chrome, Firefox and they all work flawlessly so it's definitely an LTSpice coding issue. Have spent many hours on this and so have the HP software experts.

  • Hi  ,

OK, let's see what we can figure out.

I tried downloading regular LTSpice for windows 11 and even the one at https://LTspice.analog.com/download/24.1.10_test/LTspice64.ms

Since 24.1 is not working either, it doesn't appear to be a version problem.

Program installs correctly and when I select LTspice updates it works and says "up to date"

I have to assume this is not the option in LTspice Help menu, since you aren't able to run LTspice at all. Is this a Windows thing or the end of LTspice Install?

    Program installs correctly

OK, assuming you are using the msi GUI, and not the command line, what selection have you made:

    • Install for Me
    • Install for All
    • Server
    then running msiexec /i "<Path to>\LTspice64.msi" /L*v "<Path to>\MyAppInstall.log

Can you share the log file? That might help.

Ironically we purchased this 5.3GHz 18 core latest and greatest mostly for LTSpice which is the only app that won't work.

That should be more than enough processing power.

Hi LTSpice won't work on my brand new windows 11 pro machine.

Can you share all specs including Win 11 update version. Is your machine managed (by an IT department) or did you set it up without any central management software. Do you use onedrive (of course you do; M$ wouldn't allow you not to), or google drive? Do you have an older machine that does run LTspice with the same install?

    We'll get you running somehow.

  • Hi Mike, LT Spice update check is via separate LTSpice app "check for updates".

I have tried recommended "instal for me" and "install for all" on different installs the problem is the same.

no install log file is created, both me and my IT guy have tried.

    CPU Intel(R) Core(TM) Ultra 7 265 (2.40 GHz) (HP claim clocking to 5.3GHz)

    RAM:16.0 GB (15.4 GB usable)

    Windows 11 version:25H2 build: 26200.7840

No we don't use Onedrive, for security my IT guy uninstalled it because it kept diverting sensitive files that we were trying to save to  C: to the MS cloud instead. The HP IT person who looked at this tells me it shouldn't present any problems. (unless LTSpice is assuming a MS cloud for some reason but it didn't need for windows 10 so assuming this isn't an issue) Also as I mentioned Altium works just fine without MS cloud. Best Steve

I only ask, because, sometimes Onedrive is the problem. LTspice doesn't need a cloud drive. Actually works best in a completely local environment.

If you can run msiexec from the command line with the verbose log and send the log, that might help. Would suggest "Install for Me".

    msiexec /i "<Path to>\LTspice64.msi" /L*v "<Path to>\MyAppInstall.log

    Thanks,

  • Hi Mike, Just completely reinstalled LTSpice configured "install for me" and ran DOS command but get an error message "error opening log file. Verify that specified log file location exists and is writeable"

    . Best Steve

  • Hi  ,

OK, that is strange, suggesting you do not have write permissions to some of the directories or for certain types of files. M$ has mucked with msi recently, so could be something there. Logging an msi install is very old, and pretty much always works, so it is possible M$ has broken it, as it is wont to do…

I'm gonna have you uninstall any LTspice installs you have and try something else. But, before you do that, what are the contents of …\users\[yourusername]\appdata\local\LTspice as of the last install? You can screen shot if you like. Or, let me know if that directory is empty or doesn't exist.

OK, once you see if there is anything in appdata, uninstall LTspice. Then, try installing and choose the server option. This will place LTspice in Programs. Then, start LTspice. When you start LTspice, it will unpack the libraries into your appdata directory.

  • Hi Mike, here is the current appdata LTSpice content all looks good and drilling down all the right files appear to be there . Do you still want me to uninstall ?

  • Tried server option installer hangs at "installing LTSpice" nothing in task manage either (see below)

  • Hi Mike,

Actually it's worse than I thought when I try to cancel the installation it just goes back to frozen setup wizard so will need to know process name so that I can kill it in task manager. Best Steve

That looks right for 26.0.1. Does the install/startup fail with the "Update Components" process that happens after install? This could be the problem. I wonder if this is Win PRO specific.

setup wizard so will need to know process name so that I can kill it in task manager.

It is: Background Processes > Windows Installer. I just installed on a brand new ultra 9 Win 11 personal. I will try to uninstall to confirm task name.

  • Hi Mike it looks like the server version doesn't even install the app or updates.exe below is all that was installed so looks like the regular windows 10 version is the best option. At least that installs along with apps and subfolders. My guess would be LTSpice needs a DLL that isn't present on windows 11 pro. By the way I restarted PC to get rid of crashed install screen for server version. I also looked in add/remove programs no LTSppice applications were present so I've reinstalled the regular version and now all of the directories have loaded it just won't run as before.

    Best,

    Steve

Server version install looked like this:

Regular version looks like this after install:
