The emergence of new application areas within, industrial, security, surveillance, and medical applications has created a strong need for a range of different depth and perception sensing modalities. At the heart of all these sensing modalities is some form of “Time of Flight” (ToF) measurement technique. Radar, Lidar, and Optical sensing all use a basic Time of Flight architecture approach, but each have their own advantages. Lidar typically uses IR active illumination in the wavelengths of 850/940nm, and therefore can operate well in both strong sunlight and no light conditions. Radar has an advantage in harsher environments/outdoor use and for longer range detection and measurement up to a few hundred meters. Optical sensing tends to use LED illumination and is generally targeted for lower proximity measurement.
