Q: Can I use DDS to produce modulation?

A: By default, DDS supports frequency modulation (FM), because the user can change the frequency tuning word on demand. DDS devices that allow user access to phase and amplitude adjustments, however, can also support phase modulation (PM) and amplitude modulation (AM), respectively. A DDS that offers frequency, phase and amplitude control can support a broad range of modulation formats. A special class of DDS, the quadrature digital up-converter (QDUC), is particularly suited to a broad range of quadrature modulation schemes.
