AD9851 DDS

Hai.

I have recently ordered for the evaluation board AD9851/FSPCB.

What else will i require to interface this evaluation board......?

Do i need to buy any Software tools or Programmer kit also to interface it with my PC....?

    Hello Venugopal,

Where did you purchase the eval board from?  The only reason I ask is because I don't think we've sold these eval boards for a long time.  Information on the eval board can be found in the back of the AD9851 datasheet on page 7.  The evaluation software comes with the board on a 3.5" floppy disk and connection to a computer is via a parallel port so you will need a centronics parallel port cable which does not come in the kit.  Also as old as it is, the software may not be compatible with 64-bit OS.

I might have an AD9851 eval board out in our lab to test some of this and I can look to see if we have an electronic copy of the software somewhere on file.

  • The AD9851 evaluation board kit will include software to run the evaluation board. Note, the evaluation board is more than 15 years old and has a parallel printer connector for the interface. See the BOM in the data sheet for part number. A parallel printer cable is not included in the kit. We recommend a 1284 IEEE compliant cable no longer that 6ft.

A version of eval software is available from our ftp site.  There are several different installers listed for different Windows OS, but the link below was listed for Windows XP & 2000.

    ftp://ftp.analog.com/pub/www/techSupport/designTools/evaluationBoards/downloads/AD9850_51_V2.41_Win2KXP.exe

The program does not install on Windows 7 64-bit.  You can install a virtual machine running XP, but the only VM I know that allows access to the parallel port is VMWare Player.  Windows Virtual PC does not give this ability.  If your computer does not have a parallel port, see http://ez.analog.com/message/28541.

  • Thank you very much for your replies, Kevin.G and DSB.

@Kevin.G: Yes, u r right. I searched for the eval board in ADI website and also contacted Avnet representative in Bangalore.

The Avnet representative said that he'll revert back to me on the details of the board. I was waiting for his reply.

Thanks for u that now i know how the AD9851 board can be used.

    @Kevin.G & DSB:

My application requires me to generate 32MHz Sinewave >= 600mVrms.

I used the ADIsimDDS and simulated the AD9851 for 180MHz Clock Frequency to generate a 32MHz Sinewave,

but the output wave is distorted (see the attached file). Will the same thing happen in real time in the eval board.....?

  • The attached waveform is showing the RAW (unfiltered) DAC output. So, it's normal and that's why all DDS outputs require a reconstruction filter. So, if your max output frequency is 32MHz you need a 37MHz or so low pass filter at the DDS output. The reason I picked 37MHz as not to roll the fundamential frequency's amplitude by the corner (-3dB) of the filter. You could also use a band pass filter. See attached application notes AN-823 and AN837.
