The actual cold junction is where the thermocouple wires make first contact with a board, connector or plug (two dissimilar metals). The MAX31856 uses the internal die temperature of the IC to act as the cold junction compensation of its readings. Therefore, MAX31856 should be placed as close as possible to the connector, top or bottom of the board, for accurate cold junction compensation.
