FAQ: Selecting An Output Range for the AD536x and AD537x DACs


How do I select an output range for the AD536x and AD537x DACs?



The output span of the AD536x and AD537x is principally determined by the reference voltage on the VREFx pins. The m registers can be used to compact the range if required. See FAQ: Using the m and c Registers on AD536x and AD537x DACs for more information.


The output range can be controlled by programming the Offset register The offset register controls a 14-bit DAC. The AD5371 has 3 offset DACs while the other parts have 2 offset DACs. The offset DAC can be programmed to move the output span up or down. For example, the AD537x has a default range of -4V to +8V. By programming the Offset DACs this can be changed to -5V to +7V or -3V to +9V. The output range is subject to headroom and footroom limitations.
