The on-chip diagnostics are useful in any system, even an application where functional safety is not important. The on-chip diagnostics allow the user to verify the circuit connections, the blocks within the ADC such as the PGA, reference and ADC itself can be monitored to ensure that all blocks are functioning correctly. Since the on-chip registers can be monitored, the user can be confident that no register changes have occurred. Finally, the serial interface has a lot of diagnostics such as read/write checks, any invalid read/write operations are ignored. On other ADCs, the ADC does not ignore invalid commands which can lead to register corruption or even the serial interface becoming asynchronous. The AD4170-4’s diagnostics give the user confidence that only correct read/write operations are sent/received by the AD4170-4, that on-chip registers are not corrupted, and that conversions are invalid. Any errors for these conditions will be indicated by the Error bits.

Yes, that should work and the number of AIN pins per sensor is minimized. However, sharing pins will add error to the overall conversion as there will be a voltage drop across the R of the RC anti-aliasing filter/EMC filtering which is in series with the resistive sensor, thus limited R values can be used. For optimum EMC/anti-aliasing performance, it is best practice to enable IOUT on a dedicated pin and apply the current to the resistive sensor outside of the AIN input filters. In this case, only leakage current goes through the R value of the external filter so the impact of the R value on overall accuracy is minimized. This implementation uses one extra AIN pin versus the shared implementation.

These filters can be selected on a per channel basis when using the sequencer and can also be programmed to provide simultaneous 50 Hz and 60 Hz rejection. The FIR filter is suitable for AC inputs. The FIR filter has low pass-band ripple, quick roll-off and good stop-band attenuation. Therefore, it is the optimum choice for AC inputs. The FIR filter has a long settling time. Note that the FIR filter can be used when a single channel only is enabled. It cannot be used when the sequencer is used.
