AD7616-P: What are the differences between the AD7616 and AD7616-P?

Questions: What are the differences between the AD7616 and AD7616-P? Answer: The AD7616 and AD7616-P have similar functionality, with a few key differences. The AD7616 has both serial and parallel digital interfaces The AD7616-P has a parallel only digital interface The AD7616-P has relaxed timing requirements on read & write setup and hold times In hardware control mode, more features are unlocked when using the serial interface (AD7616 only). In parallel interface mode (AD7616 and AD7616-P), some dual function control pins are used by the digital interface so may not be used for hardware control.

AD7616-P FAQ - When using the software sequencer, the first conversion result is not the expected value?

Question: When using the software sequencer, the first conversion result is not the expected value? Answer: After configuring the sequencer in software mode, a “dummy” conversion is first required in order to latch the configuration into the ADC. After one dummy conversion has been performed, the ADC is fully configured for use with the sequencer and no further dummy conversions are required. The same applies for use of the burst sequencer. Refer to Figure 56 and 57 (AD7616-P) or Figure 63 and 64 (AD7616) of the datasheet. A dummy conversion is also required after a partial reset of the AD7616 and AD7616-P.

Question: The analog input diagnostic channels are showing an unexpected result for AD7616-P, what should I do? Answer: The diagnostic channels are used to check the health of the ADC and as a “sanity” check to compare other results against. If the result is unexpected, first check the throughput rate of the ADC. The diagnostic channels are only accurate for throughputs of <250 kSPS. If throughput is ruled out as a problem then a full reset should be performed before checking any system level sources of error.
