AD7124-8 - Switching between reference sources

I'm using an AD7124-8 in a temperature data logger. I have an issue of large offsets being caused by switching between reference sources.

My channel sequence is as follows:

Start
Enable Iout0, 100uA on ain6, and Iout1, 100uA on ain7
Channel 1 : gain 32, internal reference, ain0+, ain1- (TC)
Channel 2 : gain 32, internal reference, ain2+, ain1- (TC)
Channel 3 : gain 2, refin1, ain12+, ain11- (RTD using excitation from ain6 and ain7)
Enable Iout0, 100uA on ain8, and Iout1, 100uA on ain10
Channel 4 : gain 32, internal reference, ain3+, ain4- (TC)
Channel 5 : gain 32, internal reference, ain5+, ain4- (TC)
Channel 6 : gain 2, refin1, ain14+, ain15- (RTD using excitation from ain8 and ain10)

All inputs are buffered, and sampling rate is 16.7Hz. After each sample, I disable the current channel and enable the next channel in the sequence (the auto-sequencer is of no use when switching excitation sources between channels). I've followed the guidelines in CN-0383 for the RTD inputs, and CN-0384 for the thermocouple inputs.

If RTDs are connected to both channel 3 and channel 6, everything works ok. But if one of the RTDs is disconnected, the subsequent thermocouple channels have large offsets. I'm guessing it must be the switching between an out of range reference on refin1 and the internal reference that is causing this. It takes about 15 samples before the offsets have reduced to zero. If I enable reference buffering, the problem is even worse.

Please suggest how I can eliminate this issue. Using the internal reference for the RTD channels leads to large inaccuracies so this is not an option, and waiting 15 samples is also not an option.

    Do you have a schematic diagram so I can easily visualize the input connections? I'm confused about the issue, what would be the case that you won't have the RTD connected on the board? Your assumption can be one of the probable reason but I haven't confirm this yet. Since the ADC is not intended to use with the absence of the reference source. It might be better to add diagnostics such as reference detect or use of the burnout currents to check whether your sensors are open or shorted upon initialization.

    Thanks for your reply. My product has 4 thermocouple inputs and 2 RTD inputs. The thermocouples/RTDs are connected externally by the customer, so they will not always be connected as some customers will only use thermocouples. The RTDs are not for cold junction measurement, this is handled seperately by another device.

    The burnout currents don't help as they are so much smaller than the excitation currents that they have no effect. As far as I can tell the reference detect can only detect the presence of the selected reference, i.e. I can't check whether REFIN1 is present unless I switch to REFIN1.

    I've found that if I sample the RTD channels first using INT_REF to detect whether an RTD is connected, I can avoid switching reference sources. However, I still get the offsets when I sample the subsequent channels. This suggests that it is not settling of the reference that's causing the problem, but the settling of the ADC when it switches between channels/configurations. I have the filter set to (rej60 | single_cycle | 96), so I would expect it to settle in one sample. The offset for the first sample is about 16uV, then the second sample is 7uV, etc. Any thoughts on what else I could try?

    I would like to clarify if you are not switching channels, you do not see the offset issues on the first selected channel whether what channel is it? Is that correct? Have you tried to isolate your sensors? Try to put the same fixed DC voltage for each channel, then try to enable all the channels so that the ADC will auto sequence each of the selected channel and perform conversion. Have you seen a large offset issue? Now try to disable the auto sequencer by manually enabling and disabling the channels and perform conversion, have you seen the same results as with the previous setup? I just want to understand the problem and where exactly the issue coming from.
