AD7606 BUSY Pin Unresponsive (0V) Despite Valid CNVST Trigger

Category: Hardware
Product Number: AD7606C-18

I am interfacing an AD7606 evaluation board with an STM32H753ZI in 16-bit parallel mode. The BUSY pin has permanently failed to assert (stuck at 0V), halting the read sequence.

Hardware & Power:

  • Power: 5V AVCC supplied via a 9V external charger; 3.3V VDRIVE supplied by the STM32.
  • Context: The board was recently exposed to live-switching and transients from 50A/50mA current transformers (terminated with a 100-ohm burden resistor).

Diagnostics Performed:

  • DSO Verification: Confirmed a clean 3.3V to 0V CNVST pulse reaches the ADC, but BUSY remains a flatline 0V.
  • Continuity: The PCB track from the BUSY header directly to the IC pin is perfectly intact.
  • Resistance: VDRIVE to GND and AVCC to GND both measure ~4.5 MΩ, ruling out a hard short.
  • Manual Trigger: Forcing the AD7606 awake and manually toggling CNVST yields absolutely no voltage fluctuation on BUSY.

Given the intact tracks and nominal resistances, I suspect the internal conversion state machine or output buffer was destroyed via latch-up from the CT transients.

Has the ADI support team encountered this specific failure mode where the digital trigger logic dies but the power rails survive? Are there any final IC-level diagnostics to run before I desolder and replace the chip?

  • I am troubleshooting an AD7606C-18 interfaced with an STM32H753ZI using the 18-bit parallel interface. The ADC's BUSY signal remains at 0 V.
With ADC power applied through the screw terminal, I measured:

    - AVCC = 5.0 V
    - VDRIVE = 3.3 V
    - REFCAPA = 4.4 V
    - REFCAPB = 4.4 V
    - REFIN/REFOUT = 2.5 V
    - REGCAP pin 36 = 1.9 V White check mark
    - REGCAP pin 39 = 0 V X

According to the datasheet, both REGCAP pins should be around 1.9 V.
I removed C12, the capacitor connected from REGCAP pin 39 to AGND, to check whether the capacitor was causing the problem. However, even after completely removing C12:
    Pin 39 → AGND = approximately 0 Ω

The AGND connections have also been verified and are correct.

    1. Why is REGCAP pin 39 at 0 V while pin 36 is 1.9 V?
    2. Since C12 is removed and pin 39 still measures ~0 Ω to AGND, could this indicate an internal regulator/ADC failure?
    3. Could this condition cause BUSY to remain LOW?
    4. What is the recommended method to distinguish an internal ADC fault from a PCB-level short before replacing the IC?

  • Hi  ,

Could you or your team please look into this query?

    Thanks,
    Francis

  • Hi Support Team,

While troubleshooting an unresponsive BUSY pin, I successfully isolated the fault to internal damage within the AD7606 IC itself. I found a dead short between REGCAPA (Pin 39) and GND.

To be absolutely certain, I desoldered the AD7606 chip from the evaluation board. The PCB pads are perfectly clear, but the bare IC still measures a hard short across Pin 39 to ground.

Could you please confirm if this internal short on the analog regulator (REGCAPA) is the direct cause for the BUSY pin permanently failing to assert?

Thank you for your time and support!
