Reading in Differential and Single-Ended Mode

Thread Summary

The user configured the AD7606C-16 in single-ended mode but observed the same values as in differential mode. The solution is to tie the Vx- inputs to GND for single-ended mode. The user noted an offset when reading V+ to GND with V- connected to a differential DAC, and asked about the internal differences between the modes. In single-ended mode, the Vx- is not internally connected to AGND, and the ADC measures the voltage relative to GND, while in differential mode, it measures the difference between Vx+ and Vx-.

Hello,

I configured my AD7606C-16 in single ended mode. The inputs of the ADC (+ and -) are controlled by an external DAC.

I noticed that the single mode and differential mode return the same value, i only can read the differential mode in any case. When i set the - to 0.5V, and 1V in +, i read 0.5V, in single mode or differential mode.

So whats the difference of those modes? The - is not connected internally to AGND in single ended mode?

So the problem is that i want to correct the common mode error but i can only read the differential mode and not the single-ended mode.

  • Hi,  .

You need to tie the Vx- to GND to use the single-ended mode of the device. If you want to use the differential mode, you need to use both inputs and that is your current configuration. Moreover, you can refer to this table for its input range configuration:

  • Thanks for your response. So there is no way to have an automatic Single ended mode where the - is internally connected to GND. Is what i understood. But in this case, I see an offset when i read only V+ to GND while V- is connected to my differential DAC with V- = 0. I was wondering if connect the ADC to AGND could be useful to measure the common mode error.

And another question, what is then the difference between reading in single ended and differential mode if in both modes, the measure is differential? What changes inside the ADC when one mode is chosen compared to the other one?
