Life expectancy (EOL) for the AD7870, and possible candidates for redesign?

Hello,

I have been tasked to update a design which uses the AD7870 A/D converter.  This part is very expensive, and I fear that it will be going EOL in the near future.

What is this possibility?

Is there another bipolar input device which can be considered with similar characteristics for a possible redesign.

Thanks,

  • Hi,

May I know what package of the AD7870 is used in your recent design?

    Regards,

    Andrei

  • Chriscraft,

I unfortunately don't have any insight as to how long before EOL.  This is a decision made by our marketing team on a somewhat periodic basis related to historical and forecasted sales trends, manufacturing cost, and supply chain factors including the availability of the fabrication process, package, test equipment, etc..  However, given the cost of the device I would say that unless you really need a feature you can't get out of one of our other catalog parts you should consider a redesign for both cost and vintage reasons.

I'm going to assume for the moment you don't need the military grade or ceramic packaging but let us know if that is not the case.  I'll warn you it will limit our options.

Having looked at our catalog I would say from a true bi-polar perspective you might want to consider one of our uModule (micro-module solutions) like

    ADAQ7980 - Single Ended, Bi-Polar, 16-bit 1MSPS DAQ OR

    ADAQ4001 - Differential, Bi-Polar, 16-Bit 2MSPS DAQ

Now you'll need bipolar supplies for these solutions so if you want single supply operation you might consider one of the following multi-channel devices and just use only one channel.

    AD7606-6

    AD7606-C

We also have mult-channel, true-bipolar devices like

    AD7366/7

    Hope that helps.

  • The current product uses the 28 pin PLCC package, but since this is a redesign effort any package can be used.

    Thanks,

  • Sean,

    Thank you for your reply.

I will study your suggestions to see if a good fit can be obtained for this design, and let the powers make the decision.
