Signal bandwidth versus integration period

Thread Summary

The user inquires about the highest supported signal bandwidth for the AD9162 DAC configured with fDAC = 2457.6 MHz, an interpolation factor of 4, and fDATA = 614.4 MSPS complex data. The support engineer confirms that with the first HB 2X filter set to 90% bandwidth, the maximum complex signal bandwidth is approximately 276.48 MHz or ±138.24 MHz around DC.

Hello

We would like to use the AD9162 DAC with the following configuration:

fDAC = 2457.6MHz

Interpolation factor = 4

fDATA = 614.4MSPS complex data

Number of JESD204B lanes = 4

The interpolation factor of 4 is achieved with the first two HB 2X interpolation stages. The first HB 2X will be set to 90% bandwidth.

What will be the highest supported signal bandwidth in this configuration? I have gone through the datasheet and it is not immediately obvious what the maximum signal bandwidth will be using the two HB 2X interpolation stages.

Thank you.

Gavin

  • Hi  ,

    Thank you for your interest in AD9162. Each HB filter reduces the bandwidth by 1/2 plus an additional 10%. Consecutive filters reduce bandwidth by another 1/2.

    Given you have an fDATA of 614.4 MSPS, the maximum bandwidth with the first HB filter is 0.9*(fDATA/2) or 276.48 MHz. After the first interpolation stage, the sample rate doubles, but the signal bandwidth does not increase. The second 2× HB filter has a larger absolute passband and therefore is not the limiting filter. Thus, your maximum complex signal BW is ~276.48 MHz or equivalently, ±138.24 MHz around DC for a complex baseband signal (assuming the first half-band filter is operating in the 90% mode and no other digital filter such as FIR85 is enabled).

    Best regards,
    Marco

  • Hello Marco

    Something else I spotted. My question relates to the AD9162, whereas your response mentions the AD9164. Do the same bandwidth rules apply to both?

    Thanks

  • Hi  ,

    Apologies for the delayed response. Your understanding is correct: for a complex data rate of fDATA = 614.4MSPS at 4x interpolation (HB2 in 90% BW mode), the max supported complex baseband signal BW is 276.48 MHz which corresponds to ±138.24 MHz around DC. This applies to both the AD9162 or AD9164 (they are from the same DAC family).

    Best regards,
    Marco
