Connecting to the ZCU106 FMC port, along with feeding clock from EVAL-ADF4350

Category: Software
Product Number: AD9739-R2-EBZ, AD9739

While using ZCU106 to generate some RF signals and output LVDS from the FMC port (J5 on ZCU106)
I connect "AD-DAC-FMC-ADP" with AD9739-R2-EBZ with the settings (I saw all 3 blue LED on AD-DAC-FMC-ADP light up)

and feed-in the input clock of AD9739-R2-EBZ from EVAL-ADF4350 with the settings

But I saw on the output of AD9739-R2-EBZ from the spectrum, there's only spectrum exist on 540MHz, that is what I feed in the AD9739-R2-EBZ (2160MHz / 4 = 540MHz)

I expected to see a spectrum on 474MHz.

Is there any settings from any place I could adjust?

  • Hi  ,

Thank you for your interest in AD9739.

Based on the screenshots shown above, it appears that there's an issue with the connection of the AD9739-R2-EBZ to PC as indicated at the bottom of the ACE window (see highlighted text below). Could you try disconnecting the boards from PC, power-cycling them, reconnecting them to PC, then applying the same configuration above and see if this solves the problem? Please make sure to turn the FPGA and AD9739 eval boards on first before applying a clock signal to J3 of the latter.

If the output spectrum still does not appear as expected even when the boards are successfully connected, could you provide more details about your setup such as the settings you used to generate pattern for the AD9739?

For more troubleshooting steps and information on how to get started with AD9739-R2-EBZ, kindly refer to EVALUATING THE AD9739 RF DIGITAL-TO-ANALOG CONVERTER [Analog Devices Wiki].

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Zaeefa,

Thank you for the explanations, but when I try disconnecting the boards from PC, power-cycling them, reconnecting them to PC.

The "State=Unknown" still exist. Do you have any suggestion on this?

    Currently I tried 2 PCs:

Windows 10 + 11th Gen Intel i9 11900K + Z590 MotherBoard (Do recognize AD9739-R2-EBZ on Windows "on the bottom right")

Windows 11 + 13th Gen Intel i9 13900K + Z790-i MotherBoard (Do not recognize AD9739-R2-EBZ on Windows "on the bottom right")

Do you think it will be a PC issue?
Should I try Windows 7 PC?
What process should be in order when try to connect AD9739-R2-EBZ to PC?

Also for the input clk, the spectrum looks like the following picture:

    Thank you for your help.

    Best regards,

    RobinRIT

  • Hi RobinRIT,

Thanks for the additional information. There should be no issue using either PC. Is the AD9739-R2-EBZ powered up by a 5-Vdc, 2-A power supply while being connected to PC via USB? Can you show us a photo of your setup?

    Regards,
    Zaeefa

  • Hi Zaeefa,

    Currently I'm connecting a DC Power Supply 5V, maximum 2A into AD9739-R2-EBZ.

But seems it's only use of 0.578A before the input clk is connected.

Am I on the right track?

    Best regards,

    RobinRIT

  • Hi RobinRIT,

Yes, that is alright. Since there's no problem with your setup and that you can run the example startup routine successfully, the unknown state error seems to only be indicating that ACE is unable to recognize the FPGA, but there should be no issue with the configuration of the AD9739-R2-EBZ through SPI. Can you tell us more about the pattern you are generating for the AD9739? What signal are you trying to output from the DAC?

    Regards,
    Zaeefa

  • Hi Zaeefa,

The pattern is a 6MHz bandwith ISDB-Tb signal. So I'm expected to see an 1-ch ISDB-Tb signal output from the DAC.

1- Do I need to adjust any register on AD9739-R2-EBZ for this?

2- Do I have to install the PC software from the CD with AD9739-R2-EBZ or do I just use ACE is fine?

3- Is there any ways I can seek for help from ADI faster?

    Regards,

    RobinRIT

  • Hi  ,

Apologies for the delay, and thank you for your patience. Here are my answers to your queries:

    1. Do I need to adjust any register on AD9739-R2-EBZ for this?
From the info you have provided so far, it seems the essential steps to properly set up the AD9739 has already been followed (except RCV_LOOP should be enabled). The DAC should be properly running when all the three indicators in ACE (MU Controller Locked, Data Receiver Locked, DLL Tracking Established) are lit up. Can you try generating a single tone (anywhere within the first Nyquist zone) through the DAC with the same clock input and see if the output shows up at the right place in the spectrum? You can also try the settings used in the abovementioned Wiki UG to check if you can obtain the expected FFT plot.
    2. Do I have to install the PC software from the CD with AD9739-R2-EBZ or do I just use ACE is fine?
Using just ACE is fine for configuring the AD9739-R2-EBZ.
    3. Is there any ways I can seek for help from ADI faster?
You can contact your local FAE to set up an efficient support channel or reach out to us via Support | Analog Devices.
