Start up behavior

Category: Hardware
Product Number: AD9254S

We are seeing odd startup behavior on several AD9254 devices and would like guidance on the correct way to reset and initialize the ADC.

System overview

  • Multiple AD9254s interface to an FPGA.
  • The FPGA generates the ADC sample clock (CLK±).
  • A power‑on reset (POR) circuit holds the FPGA in reset until all power supplies are stable.
  • After POR releases the FPGA, the FPGA runs its initialization sequence and then starts driving the ADC sample clock.
  • We do not use the SPI port; the ADCs run in their default pin‑mode configuration.

Issue description

With other ADCs we usually perform a hard reset using a dedicated reset pin. The AD9254 does not have a reset pin, so we are relying on power‑up behavior. The PDWN/OEB pins are not connected to the FPGA.

On our boards, at startup we observe:

  • The DCO clock is not stable for some time after the FPGA starts the sample clock.
  • The Out‑of‑Range (OR) flag is asserted during this time.
  • The ADC data is clearly incorrect (not consistent with the analog input).
  • We have multiple AD9254 devices on the same board, and each device takes a different amount of time before the DCO, OR, and data become normal and stable.
  • Once the devices settle, the data looks correct and performance is as expected.

Questions

  1. What is the recommended reset / initialization sequence for the AD9254 at power‑up?
  2. Is it expected that DCO and OR may be unstable for some period after power‑up or clock start, and if so, what maximum settling time should we design for before trusting the data?

Thank you in advance!

  • Hi

Thank you for using AD9254. We are looking into your query and will get back to you as soon as possible.

  • Hi

The AD9254 does not include a dedicated reset pin, so proper startup relies on the normal power-up sequence. One key requirement is that a valid and stable CLK± signal be present during device initialization.

Based on your description, the AD9254 appears to be powering up before the FPGA begins driving the sample clock. We recommend verifying whether providing a stable CLK± signal during initialization resolves the observed startup behavior.

In addition, the AD9254 is sensitive to clock quality. For best performance, a low-jitter clock source is recommended, as clock jitter directly impacts ADC operation and dynamic performance. FPGA-generated clocks do not always provide the lowest jitter, so it may be worth evaluating the quality of the clock being presented to the ADC.

The datasheet also specifies a wake-up time of approximately 350 µs, during which DCO, OR, and output data should not be considered valid. After this interval, allow for the ADC's 12-cycle pipeline latency before using the output data.

  • It's not possible to provide a stable sample clock during power on reset. However, I think it would be possible to send a SPI command to reset the ADC after the sample clock is stable. Is there a way we could configure that the ADC is providing a stable DCO clock after we reset the ADC? Is the only recommendation waiting 350 µs?

  • Hi

You may use the power-down feature as a reset mechanism for the ADC after the sample clock is stable. This can be done either through SPI command or by asserting the PWDN pin high when using non-SPI mode. However, after the ADC is power back up, the device still requires its wake-up time before normal operation is guaranteed. According to the datasheet, the wake-up time is typically 350us. Please note that the wake-up time depends on the values of the decoupling capacitor connected to REFT and REFB.

  • That's good news. Is it acceptable to wait the required wakeup time after the FPGA provides a stable sample clock? ADC & FPGA released from reset. Time passes. FPGA provides ADC with sample clock. Wait 350us. ADC DCO, OR and Data are all now stable.

    Please and thank you

  • Hi

To ensure that the ADC has a stable sample clock upon start up, I recommend resetting the ADC using PWDN pin or SPI command after the FPGA begins providing a stable sample clock. This can be done by placing the ADC into power-down mode and then bringing it back to normal operation. This ensures the ADC starts up under valid clock conditions. After the reset, wait for the specified wake-up time. The DCO and data output should be valid afterward.
