EVAL-AD9083 & ADS8-V3EBZ : The operation of the evaluation board is unstable.

Question

Hi, 
 I'm DFAE. I have a question from my customer. 
 My customer is evaluating the AD9083 using EVAL-AD9083 and ADS8-V3EBZ. However, after powering on and starting up the ADS8-V3EBZ, when trying to operate the EVAL-AD9083 from the GUI, the LED on the EVAL-AD9083 lights up once or twice, then goes out and stops working. If you repeat the same thing several dozen times, the LED on the EVAL-AD9083 may stay on and it may operate normally. 
 Once it operates normally, it will continue to operate normally unless the power is turned off. But , if the power is turned off, it will not start normally again. 
 The AC power supply that came with the evaluation kit is used as the power supply. The latest GUI, etc. are downloaded from the web and used. 
 What could be the reason why it rarely operates normally? Also, are there any ways to improve this?

Hi AkiraO , 
 I may suggest some troubleshooting steps. It sounds like the LED you're referring to is the one connected to the 12V FMC supply. 
 I would suggest taking a look at the schematic for the ADS8-V3EBZ board. The 12V supply goes through a MOSFET that is controlled by a Power Monitor ADM1178-1ARMZ. 
 
 See if you can measure the voltages at the pins of these devices going backwards from the FMC connector. Is the 12V preset at TP10 (also try unplugging the AD9083 board and see if the voltage works fine after)? Is the VIN_12V input okay? Is the ALERTB pin asserted? What is the voltage at the MOSFET gate? See if you can measure the current through this line (R338 looks like a current sensing resistor, so the voltage drop accross it can be used). If there is overcurrent, maybe there's a short circuit somewhere on 1 of the boards. 
 You could also try to measure with an oscilloscope if there are signals going through to the SDA and SCL pins. 
 Also inspect these devices visually. It's unlikely, but sometimes there can be an intermittent solder connection or a particle shorting out some pins. 
 If all else fails, you could try (at your own risk) to bypass the power monitor by soldering a wire directly from VIN_12V (provided the voltage there is okay) to FMC_12V, but you need to make sure there is no overcurrent or other conditions that could damage the board or power supply. 
 
 There is also an LED for the 3.3V PG_C2M pin, but there's less that could be going wrong there. Still, you could use the same troubleshooting steps for that.
