Single ended to differential ended converter for AD9215 ADC Input

Category: Hardware
Product Number: AD9215BRUZ-80

Hello team,

As suggested we should use differential input configuration for ADC optimum performance. So we have to use single ended to differential ended conversion before ADC like RF transformer or ADC Driver.

In my application, Input frequency to ADC is 70MHz and Sampling rate 60 MSPS

As, I wanted to use AD9215 ADC above second nyquist zone, As suggested in datasheet page no-15, we should use RF Transformer for this application in order to achieve true performance of AD9215.

But before ADC I want to use VGA which will have differential output and i got application note for High dynamic range VGA AD8331 with ADC AD9215 interfacing ( AN-1529).

In application note AN-1529, RF transformer is not being used in the circuit (attached image). So i want to know can we use same for my application ( Input frequency to ADC is 70MHz and Sampling rate 60 MSPS ) ?

Also i want to know if i use same circuit interfacing (attached image) , does it will affect ADC performance ?

Thanks and Regards,

Deepak

  • Hi Deepak123,

You can refer to the optional XFR (T2: ETC1-1-13 of Macom Transformer) of the LFCSP since the analog fronts-end of LFCSP and TSSOP evaluation boards are the same.

  • Hi Xavier,

There are two part number mentioned for RF transformer for single ended to differential input,

    1. ADT1-1WT (Not matching our required operating temperature) [Mini-circuits]

    ADT1-1WT symbol:

    2.  ETC1-1-13 from MACOM ( Secondary CT is NC in this one, also Functional schematic/symbol of RF transformer is completely different as compared to ADT1-1WT and ADC evaluation (RF Transformer symbol)

    MACOM ETC1-1-13 functional schematic:

    Evalboard schematic:

As we are using AD9215 in under sampling application so, I am concerned about the selection of RF Transformer. Please let me know the suitable RF transformer.

  • Hi Deepak123,

ETC1-1-13 is one of the mostly used part for evaluation boards so we recommend to use this one.

From what I understood, in the case of the circuit of LFCSP shown in the AD9215 datasheet, the secondary CT of the ADT1-1WT was not utilized and the VCM is provided by the encircled Voltage dividers instead.

The configuration of the circuit makes it possible to substitute ADT1-1WT with ETC1-1-13 even though it doesn’t have secondary CT.
