How to configure and communicate with the AD9959 Evaluation Board using Raspberry Pi Pico W

Category: Hardware
Product Number: AD9959

Controller: Raspberry Pi Pico W (RP2040) DDS Board: AD9959 Evaluation Board Communication: SPI Power: USB power to the evaluation board Connections made according to the AD9959 User Guide Problem

The evaluation board powers up correctly (LEDs are on), but I cannot communicate with the AD9959.

Specifically:

I cannot read or write any AD9959 registers over SPI. The device does not respond as expected. I am not using the Analog Devices evaluation software; I want to control the DDS directly from the Raspberry Pi Pico W. What I have checked Verified the SPI wiring (SCLK, SDIO, CS, RESET, GND). Common ground between the Pico W and the evaluation board. SPI settings (Mode 0, different clock frequencies). Reset sequence before communication. Questions Can the AD9959 Evaluation Board be controlled directly by an external microcontroller such as the Raspberry Pi Pico W? Are there any jumpers or switches on the evaluation board that must be configured to disable the onboard USB controller and allow external SPI control? Does the AD9959 require a specific initialization sequence before SPI communication? Has anyone successfully interfaced this evaluation board with a custom microcontroller? If so, could you share the required hardware configuration?

Thank you for any suggestions.

A photo of your wiring between the Pico W and the AD9959 board. Your SPI initialization code. Your register write/read functions. The jumper (JP1, JP2, etc.) settings on the evaluation board. The exact revision of the evaluation board.

This additional information will make it much easier for others to identify whether the issue is with the hardware configuration or the SPI communication.

  • Hi  ,

Apologies for the late response. I have been having problems with notification lately.

Yes, the AD9959 eval board can be controlled by an external MCU. Your issue is that the onboard USB controller is still driving the SPI bus.

    Fix: Move W7 to MANUAL, remove W1, W2, W3, W10, keep W9.

Init sequence: Assert RESET high (~1 ms) → release → wait 1 ms → write registers → pulse I/O_UPDATE after each write.

    All the best,

    Jules
