How to read ETC register of DS1683 properly via I2C?

The ETC register is a four-byte register. In order to read the ETC register properly, users should follow the reading procedure at following. Start -> Slave address write byte (D6h) -> Slave Ack -> Memory address byte ->repeated restart -> Slave address read byte (D7h) -> Data1 byte ->Master Ack -> Data2 byte ->Master Ack ->Data3 byte ->Master Ack -> Data4 byte ->Master Nack -> Stop

What are the programming differences between DS1682 and DS1683?

Below are some of the programming differences between DS1682/DS1683. In general the devices are very similar, but there are some potential functional pitfalls customers may see when switching between the two: The DS1683 was designed to halt writes when the EVENT pin was active high. We did not want the user to be able to modify the counter while the internal oscillator was incrementing the counter. So writes are only available after the EVENT pin has been low for at least tW (the EEPROM write time). The circuit structure of the EVENT pin prevents any writes/communication from occurring when the EVENT pin is high. The DS1683 EEPROM is divided into 2 pages of 8-bytes. The I2C communication needs to be stopped between accessing the separate pages. The DS1682 (which has only one 10-byte page.) doesn’t have this need.

DS1683 Supply Current Specifications

Q: In the DC Electrical Characteristics there are entries for Active Supply Current (ICCA) and EEPROM Write Current (IEE). Is the EEPROM write current additional to the supply current? What is the maximum current drawn? A: No I2C activity is possible when a write to the EEPROM is occurring. The Active Supply Current is specified during active timekeeping and communication. The EEPROM write current is the total current during the EEPROM write cycle. The two currents are the total ICC current drawn during the mode of operation (active communication/timekeeping vs EEPROM write/timekeeping). The maximum supply current we expect would be 350uA (IEE) which would only be drawn at high temperatures during a EEPROM write. At all other times the maximum supply current would be 300uA (ICCA).

Why does the DS1683+ timer output the maximum value for the timer and event counter (0xFF for every byte) after functioning for a while, despite correct device and register addresses?

If the EEPROM write is interrupted, it could cause a 1's value. The first step in the EEPROM write cycle is to set the registers to all 1's, then the second stage writes the new value. If the EEPROM write cycle is interrupted or truncated, that could result in all one values. Ensure that the maximum EEPPROM timing is followed.

What could be causing the DS1683+ EEPROM write cycle to become corrupted?

To prevent interruption of the EEPROM write cycle, there must not be any I2C commands issued during the 20ms EEPROM Write Time (tW). If you do not wait the full 20ms after each write, then there is a risk interrupting the write cycle.

DS1683 Programming Temperature range

Q: Operating temperature range for DS1683 is -40 ⁰C to 85 ⁰C but the Programming temp range specified is 0 ⁰C to 70 ⁰C . Why are they different? A: The Programming Temperature is the range under which we guarantee the listed minimum number of EEPROM write cycles before EEPROM wearout occurs. The user can certainly write at higher temperatures (up to 85 ⁰C ) but the number of EEPROM writes that can occur before EEPROM wearout is not guaranteed.

Q: What is the status of the DS1683EVKit and EVKit data sheet? Several places on the Maxim site mention this kit but the DS1683 device data sheet and the Maxim site provide no links for the kit. A: There is no DS1683EVKit. Apparently, one was initially planned but we did not actually manufacture it and there are no plans to do so in the foreseeable future.

No, there is no kit for the DS1683.

How long is the EEPROM data retention time of the DS1683S?

The DS1683 EEPROM can retain data for at least 10 years.
