Can CML buffers be used without far-end termination resistors?

Category: Hardware
Product Number: HMC720

Although it is accepted practice that an ECL/PECL buffer can properly drive a transmission-line with termination present only at the source (back termination), such a practice appears to never be discussed in any CML datasheet or app note.

Can a CML output pair be operated at speed successfully without external connection of 50 Ohm resistors to Vcc?  (This likely comes down to whether a CML device can necessarily tolerate the 2x voltage swing that would then be present at its output.)  If so, why is the viability of such a practice not widely acknowledged? If not, why not?
