Whether HMC7044 can generate a clock with a frequency of 2GHz ?

Category: Hardware
Product Number: HMC7044

I want to drive an ADC with a sampling rate of 2GHz and need the HMC7044 to generate a 2GHz clock. But I saw that the HMC7044 Datasheet describes the internal VCO frequency range as 2150~3550MHz, and the 14-channel output can only be divided by an integer multiple of the VCO, so when divided by 1, it can output 2150~3550MHz, and when divided by 2, it can output 1075~1775MHz. Is it impossible to generate clocks with frequencies between 1775~2150MHz? The datasheet describes the frequency range of the external VCO as 400~3200MHz. Is it possible to generate a clock with a frequency of 2GHz only with the help of an external VCO? Or is there something wrong with my understanding?

  • Hi YaoWenQi,

HMC7044 has integrated VCO covering from 2.4GHz to 3.2GHz. Unlike ADI's newest generation PLL/VCO synthesizers, which have an octave range covering all frequency ranges (ie. 6.4GHz to 12.8GHz), HMC7044 doesn't have an octave range coverage on the fundamental VCO frequency.

Using only integrated VCO, HMC7044 can generate frequencies between 2.4GHz to 3.2GHz with a divider value of 1  or 1.2GHz to 1.6GHz with an output divider value of 2, and so on.

However, HMC7044 can use any external VCO from 400MHz to 3.2GHz and generate frequencies accordingly. It is possible to use a 2GHz external VCO to generate a 2 GHz output clock with HMC7044.

  • Thank you for your answer.

Because I want to use the VCO inside the clock chip to generate a 2GHz clock output, the HMC7044 cannot be used.

I need to use a clock chip to generate multiple 2GHz clocks to drive ADCs and DACs with a sampling rate of 2GHz. I also need to generate multiple SYSREFs for JESD204B synchronization.

Can you recommend a new model of clock chip to me?

  • Hi,

Unfortunately, I am not aware of a clock distributor with 2 GHz internal VCO and JESD204B support. HMC7043 Clock distributor and external PLL/VCO (ADF4377) combination can be a good idea.

    HMC7043 Datasheet: HMC7043 (Rev. B) (analog.com)

ADI's new generation PLL/VCO synthesizers can generate 2GHz. ADF4377 and ADF4368 might be suitable candidates.

Depending on your performance requirements,  we have older-generation PLL/VCO products that are capable of generating a 2GHz signal. I recommend checking ADF4355, ADF4356, ADF4371, ADF4360-2.

    Thanks,
    Emrecan
