Inputs:

SYS IN (XOA) – 50MHZ

REF A – PPS input from GPS receiver locked to GPS. Jitter +/- 25 nanoseconds typical, +/- 200 nanoseconds maximum.

 

Outputs:

OUT0A – 1HZ

OUT0B – 10MHZ

 

Normally, Loop Bandwidth (register 0x1204-0x1207) is set to 20000 (20 millihertz). After the AD9545 is locked, GPS is locked, and the PPS output (OUT0A) is within 200 nanoseconds of the PPS input (REF A) the Loop Bandwidth is changed to 3000 (3 millihertz). This works as expected and is stable. However, the PPS output (OUT0A) skews by 3-6 nanoseconds every second so that it can track the PPS input. We need to get the PPS output (and in turn the 10MHZ) as stable as possible.

 

We need the PPS output to skew no more than 1 nanosecond per second under the conditions above. How do we accomplish this? I have tried reducing the Loop Bandwidth down to 1000 (1 millihertz) but the output becomes unstable and begins drifting by large amounts.

    HI,

    It would be good if you sent me the cso file the evaluation software creates. I am sure you did not create this register configuration by yourself. You must have used the evaluation software to create the cso file and then you extracted the register values from it.

    I am concerned that you change the loop bandwidth in real time. We use 50 mHz, not 30mHz or 20 mHz.

    How do you generate the 1 PPS reference. I am afraid you see the 1Hz output jumps because the input jumps around.

  • I attached the last .cso file I used which was in 2019. Since we now have our own custom hardware I don't use ACE anymore. The register dump is current. I dumped the registers from our proprietary hardware using our firmware.

    The 1 PPS reference comes from a GPS receiver that is locked to GPS. Typically, the jitter is +/- 25 nanoseconds. Occasionally it can be larger (See initial description in the support request). We need the 1Hz output (and, in turn, the 10MHZ output) to be as stable as possible. Our goal is +/- 1 nanosecond. It seems like the only way I can do this is to reduce the Loop Bandwidth. After the AD9545 is stable and the PPS output is within 200 nsec of the input, I lower the Loop Bandwidth to 3mHz. At 3mHz, the output is pretty stable, typically drifting 3-6nsec per second. But, when I take the Loop Bandwidth below 3 mHz the AD9545 output becomes unstable. I only need the 1 nanosecond stability when there is GPS lock.

    Is there anything else I can do to achieve a maximum change of 1 nanosecond per second when the device has a GPS lock?

    I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

    I took the txt file you sent and introduced it into ACE. I recommend always using ACE evaluation software because the configuration wizard provides feedback to ones inputs and in this way you avoid bad AD9545 settings.

    Here are my comments on your configuration:

    - Make sure the 50 MHz clock you provide as the system clock input is generated by a TCXO or OCXO. You need the system clock to be stable in 1 Hz loops. This most likely will be a very expensive solution. My recommendation is to use the 52 MHz crystal resonator as the system clock source and then provide a cheap, much lower frequency (i.e. 10 MHz) TCXO or OCXO at REFB and use it to stabilize the system clock. See data sheet page 137 (System Clock Compensation) and page 142 (Compensation Method 3).

    - You bypass REFA monitor, which is not good. You need the monitor to signal if REFA becomes invalid. If you cannot get it to work with your input clock, modify it until it works. It is something bad going on with your 1PPS source because the monitor is set to accept phase offsets of 1.5%. You most likely need a better PPS source. You cannot expect the AD9545 DPLL to work correctly and be very stable if your reference is not. 

    - the REFA frequency lock threshold is 1400ps, which is large. My recommendation is to leave it at the default, 700 ps.

    - the REFA phase lock threshold is at 1400 ps. This is acceptable, but in the end it depends on the PPS source quality.

    - the REFA frequency and phase fill rates are set at default, 20. I recommend increasing them to 200. Leave the drain rates at 20, the default.

    - the AD9545 DPLL0 cannot close the loop in 1Hz situations directly. It needs a 1Hz modulation applied to an output onto which to apply a tag to the TDC output. Your DPLL0 setting is not correct. This is why I recommend using the configuration wizard.

     -the DPLL0 slew limit rate is 1000ps/s. This means the DPLL0, every second, can reduce the phase offset between the reference and the feedback clock with max 1000ps/s. This means, that worst case, when a 0.5s phase delay needs to be cancelled, it takes 0.5/1E-9=15.8 years. Why don't you leave the default value which is around 100 us/s?

    - the DPLL0 profile selection is manual holdover. You should set it to automatic because when the REFA is invalid, the DPLL0 should enter automatically in holdover.

    I created a cso file with some of my recommendations. If you decide to go the system compensation route I proposed, I'll add that. You can extract from it the registers values to use them in your system.

    Bottom line: start with making the REFA to be considered valid by the AD9545. Then you can concentrate on stability issues and locking thresholds.
