HMC7044 GUI configuration

Hello good Evening!

I have been asked for support regarding the GUI from HMC7044 and my customer tested the pre defined quickstart with success.

He is interested in some documentation that shows how parameters from GUI work.

I have read and understood the UG-826 but when loading the HMC7044_ 983MHz_122p88MHz_VCXO_DoublerON.py, I see dividers are not the same for the outputs and in the tutorial it says that all outputs will have the same frequency. That confused me a little.

Is there a tutorial or something that will explain for him how he could get a desired output frequency with the lowest jitter possible?

    I could not understand the point that confuses you? Please let me know where it says "all outputs will have the same frequency" so that we can correct if something is wrong. There is not any restriction between outputs, that is totally depends on your requirements. You can select the divider values and adjust the output frequencies independently as you wish.

    The main point is both of plls and also dividers are integer so you cannot generate fractional multiple of inputs. Hence it will be better to use 100MHz VCXO instead of the one on the Eval-Board (122.88MHz).

    From the table I assume you have two different cases. In the first case you can adjust the settings as follows (assuming a 100MHz VCXO):
    Prescaler R0=1, R1=1, N1=10
    Doubler=x2, R2=1, N2=12 (so you have fVCO=2400MHz)
    Using divider values as 24 and 6 will give you 100MHz and 400MHz respectively from the output you desire (from which output you want).

    In the second case you cannot have 1600MHz and 2700MHz at the same time. You can adjust the VCO frequency between 2400MHz-3200MHz, then you only have integer dividers. You can either use

    --3200MHz as fVCO and use output divider as 2 to obtain 1600MHz or

    --2700MHz as fVCO and use output divider as 1 to obtain 2700MHz.
    If you can prepare a frequency plan accordingly I can help you to generate a configuration file.

    I will let my customer know about these details, I understood perfectly your recommendations, and would like to know from you a little more about the details on the parameters chosen:

    1) For  the first case: 10 Mhz input on CLKIN0_RFSYNC and 2 outputs (100 Mhz and 400 Mhz).

         a) Calculations regarding choice of parameters on PLL1 and PLL2

         b) Why this combination was chosen?

    Calculations are as follows:

    fVCXO/N1 = fRef/Precaler/R1

    fVCO/N2 = fVCXO*Doubler/R2

    We mainly aim to have PFD1 frequency about 10MHz (datasheet) and PFD2 frequency as large as possible - with max 250MHz. However keep in mind that these are all general recommendations and can be changed from case to case.
