When choosing an ADC for a battery powered or low power systems the power consumption figure rated in the data sheet is not the only important specification to consider. Many ADC features and system design decisions will affect the power budget. Understanding these features of SAR converters and how they affect power consumption are key when trying to extent battery life.
In my article I discuss important SAR ADC features and system design decisions that can affect the power consumption to maximize battery life. I also introduce the AD7091R a 12-bit precision SAR ADC offering market leading power consumption figures that suit a wide range of applications.
