"There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things." — Niccolo Machiavelli, The Prince (1532)

In other words, change is hard. It can be a bit scary, too. There are so many questions. “How do we stay competitive?” “Who can I trust to provide my company with a solution not just for today, but for the inevitable changes in the future?” “What’s the best way to proceed?”

Perhaps no one feels this pressure more than managers of manufacturing facilities, challenged as they are to improve productivity, margins and (or course) profitability. To achieve their goals, they need a real-time view into all steps of the manufacturing process. But many factories are not equipped with machines capable of communicating from the factory floor to the higher-level control system. In fact, down on the floor itself many legacy systems (a nice way of saying “old”) have been built with machines incapable of communicating with one another or sharing the same network infrastructure. This further complicates the task of monitoring and improving productivity because different machines often produce data in different formats, requiring even more equipment to translate between them. It’s not unlike having a lathe speaking German, a drill press speaking French, and a conveyor belt understanding only Cantonese. With this cacophony of languages how can one aggregate, translate and communicate data so it can be analyzed and acted upon? A factory so equipped has communication problems both horizontally (across the floor) and vertically (up to management). So we come back to all those questions, ultimately asking “What’s the best way to proceed?”

Analog Devices’ new physical layer solutions help solve the problem with a way to make every factory connected and, by extension, its managers more connected and smarter too. By using industry-standard Ethernet, ADIN1300 gigabit PHY and ADIN1200 10Mb/100Mb PHYs provide a well-supported, scalable, flexible, and high bandwidth communication backbone for a smart factory that delivers information between machines in a time critical fashion from the floor to the managers upstairs. By deploying an IEEE standard across a smart factory, it enables seamless communication between machines and management; in other words, no more translating German to Cantonese!

From OT to IT, from across the floor and up to the boardroom, Analog Devices solution enables the Smart Factory

In this smart solution for factory automation are products with the robustness necessary to reliably send and receive data across the factory floor under what are often extreme conditions; including wide temperature variations and electrically noisy environments. With the ADIN1300 and ADIN1200 all areas of a factory can be monitored and controlled on a single, seamless, secure, and high bandwidth network that supports time critical communications.

The Smart Factory is here, and there’s nothing scary about it. For more information visit the ADIN1200 and ADIN1300 product pages, or contact Analog Devices here.
