AD1955: Independency of the channels

Question

I have a question about AD1955 Stereo D/A converters. I am wondering that if
we are able to use the left and right channels of this DAC as if they are
indepent channels. That is, can we say that we have a single chip having two
independent DACs for different purposes (dual output DAC)?

Answer

No, this is not possible. The left and right channels are not totally
independent and AD1955 can not be used as a standard 2 channel DAC. This device
can be used in stereo or in mono mode. To switch to mono mode, the 2 outputs
should be cross coupled as shown in fig 12. The DAC is then is set to Mono
Mode, Left or Right channel, using bits 11:10 in DAC Control Register 0. The
chip sends the selected channel to the left output straight and to the right
channel inverted. The user does not have to do anything to the incoming stereo
data.
