Some of our customers have communicated to us that a small, controlled amount of clipping is sometimes acceptable to maintain loudness. The key is that the output would still be limited so you wouldn’t hear large amount of distortion, but you would let a little amount of distortion through. So for the customer where clipping is absolutely unacceptable, they would use positive headroom. But if the customer felt that trading a little bit of potential clipping for loudness was beneficial, they could use negative headroom.
