Serial port I/O

Hi All.

I am designing a low power audio system with the intention of using an ADAU1777 with a MAX98390.

I notice the ADAU1777 has only one serial port but I was unsure if it could support full duplex on I2S for input to the ADAU and then output to the MAX98390 from the ADAU1777 or if it could do I2S input, and then TDM output on the 7 available MPx pins.

    There is only one serial port and one set of clock pins. So the problem is that you cannot have the serial input be I2S and the output be TDM. Because the bit clock is different for both of them. 

    So if you need to input or output more than two channels you will have to set it to TDM mode and both input and output will be in the same mode.

    Many thanks for the reply.

    The engineers have asked if then it can run in i2s full duplex?

    They plan to use an infineon CX3 in I2S master mode and then connect it to the adau1777 to process the audio data, and then pass it to the MAX98390.

    Do excuse if I am getting anything wrong as I am not well versed in audio engineering and just summarising what the engineers are asking me

  • Hello Emily,

    The serial port uses sample rate converters so this makes it easy to interface. So you can make the CX3 be the clock master to drive the serial port BCLK and LRCLK inputs. This internally will also drive the serial data outputs as well. So then you have to externally "Y" the clocks out of the CX3 also to the amplifier chip. Then connect the SDATA Output of the 1777 over to the amplifier and you should be fine.
