Understanding SAI1/2 and internal sampling rates, and speaker output

Category: Hardware
Product Number: MAX98089

Hey All,

I'm trying understand how I may be able to use the MAX98089 in my application. We are developing a communication device that loops together two headsets, as well as Bluetooth audio, and some beeps. Right now we are using a MAX9867, with the I2S wired to an STM32, which also has an I2S port wired to the Bluetooth radio.

This works ok but converting the Bluetooth audio in the STM is a bit burdensome. We generate the beeps in the STM32. The issues we see are mostly around audio quality so I was hoping to get a CODEC with better DR on the ADC and DAC, which the 98089 looks like it does, but I'm not totally sure if the 98089 is going to have the output volume we need using the class H amp, but the headsets we are using are 8ohm drivers... So I think we may be able to wire the outputs to the speaker outputs and just limit the output power a lot. Is there any reason not to use the Speaker outputs with 30-40mm 8ohm drivers?

Second topic is the dual DAI ports and how they are handled with internal sampling. Currently we run the 9867 at 32kHz and use the internal sideband to pass audio from headset to headset. The Bluetooth radio runs at 16k or 8k and we up/down convert in the STM, as well as mixing in beep sounds when needed. My question here is can we run DAI1 as a slave to the radio so it takes in 16 or 8k digital audio, but still run the internal sampling rates higher? 32 to 48kHz? Then, I want to wire in the DAI2 to the STM for the beep generation, which we can make any frequency we want. I'd love to also do USB audio from STM but it doesn't look like DAI2 has audio out other than looping DAI1's in?
