EVAL-ADAU196XAZ out-of-the-box experience

Thread Summary

The user is trying to configure the EVAL-ADAU196XAZ eval board for external TDM16 input and SPDIF input. The support engineer provided detailed switch settings for external TDM16 signals (MCLK, BCLK, LRCLK, DSDATA1) and explained how to set the I2C address using S10. The user also needs to configure the board for SPDIF input and ensure correct setup in SigmaStudio 4.7 or ARWB 3.2.1 to see the output. The support engineer emphasized using the second half of the user guide for Rev. B/C boards and provided specific switch configurations for clock and data routing.

I am currently trying to figure out how to use the EVAL-ADAU196XAZ out-of-the-box.

I found that there is an unpublished document for the Rev. B version of the eval board.

/cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/326/UG_2D00_564_2800_RevA-and-RevC_2900_Preliminary.pdf

I have some questions to get started:

  1. The document mentions about the ON/OFF position of the RED switches. May I ask which side is the ON/OFF for these switches: i.e. S2, S5, S6, S9, S7, S10
    1.
    2. For example:
      •
  2. How do I configure the switches for a microcontroller as an external source for MCLK, BCLK,  LRCLK for TDM16 with TDM16 data going in to DSDATA1 only?
    1. How do I configure the I2C address on the ADAU1966A for the microcontroller to set the registers? Is it necessary when I run on Standalone mode?
    2. I am able to use the adapter board for the eval board to use the ARWB 3.2.1 and SigmaStudio 4.7. Does it override the configuration for the ADAU1966A registers set by the microcontroller?

    • Here I have my basic wiring with an external source:
      Can you comment on the switch configurations to produce the expected output from the MCU settings below?
      I configured my MCU to these settings to send a unique tone to each DAC output:

      // Frame Length: 256 BCLK cycles
      // Slots: 16 active
      // Bits/Slot: 16
      // Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
      // Clock Mode: External MCLK
      //
      // TDM MODE PIN ASSIGNMENTS:
      // MCU Pin 23 = MCLK (Master Clock) - 22.5792 MHz
      // MCU Pin 21 = BCLK (Bit Clock)    - 11.2896 MHz
      // MCU Pin 20 = LRCLK (Frame Sync)  - 44.1 kHz
      // MCU Pin 7  = SDATA (Serial Data) - 16-bit TDM

      Measured voltages:
      1N = 1P: Vmax = 1.54V, Vmin = 1.25V
      2N = 2P: Vmax = 1.54V, Vmin = 1.25V
      .
      .
      .
      16N = 16P: Vmax = 1.54V, Vmin = 1.25V
      OUT1N = OUT1P:  0V
      OUT2N = OUT2P:  0V
      .
      .
      .
      OUT16N = OUT16P:  0V
      Here is what I had with ARWB:
      and for SigmaStudio:
      How do I setup SigmaStudio 4.7 or ARWB 3.2.1 to be able to see the output correctly?
      Unfortunately, a proper documentation of the hardware/software setup to get started with the ADAU1966A is non-existent at the moment.
