I have read through the EVAL-SSM3582Z user guide (UG-934) and have been unable to find a description of the functionality of J8 in the circuit (page 8 of 13) and how it is to be used. Can someone please explain to me the purpose of J8 on the evaluation board?

Yes, the info is kind of not explicit and assumes the reader knows other information.
The first bit of info is knowing that the USBi can supply 5V from the USB buss. It appears on pin 4
The SSM3582 user guide actually does show what it is but just does not explain it.
It is to select what voltage to use for the I2C pull up resistors?
Here is the schematic:
So J8 is to select if you want to use the on-board 3.3V or the USB 5V as a pull up voltage for the I2C buss.
Pin 4 really should have been labeled as the USB-5V or something like that.
