Is MAX97220A an updated version of MAX9722A?

Question

MAX97220A&ndash;MAX97220E datasheet says "Footprint Compatible with the MAX9722" and describes how to make a board compatible with both in "Figure 4. MAX97220A vs. MAX9722 PCB Layout". 
 Does that imply the MAX97220A is a newer, better version of the MAX9722A? What's improved? 
 Our factory substituted the MAX9722A and I want to know what to test to confirm that it's good enough.
