Low power Audio codec Group delay and Serial port sampling rate

Category: Hardware
Product Number: ADAU1372 ADAU1772 ADAU1777 ADAU1787

Hi,

The low power audio codec, ADAU1372/1772, ADAU1777 and ADAU1787.

To use these devices for the noise cancelling system, I would like to understand correctly about following Group delay values.

ADC in - ASRC - Serial out

Serial in -> ASRC -> DAC out

In the data sheets, there are several plots that show "Group delay vs Frequency", for example, as below.

ADAU1777

Figure 32. Group Delay vs. Frequency, fS = 786 kHz, Signal Path = AIN0 to ASRC to ADC_SDATA0

Figure 44. Group Delay vs. Frequency, fS = 786 kHz, Signal Path = DAC_SDATA to ASRC to LOUTLx

Regarding them, please let me ask.

Q1. Serial port sampling rate, the condition for the Group Delay vs. Frequency plots

Q2. How does the Group delay changes, depending on the Serial port sampling rate ? Are there any calculating formulas?

Q3. Do the ADAU1372/ADAU1772, ADAU1777, ADAU1787 have similar Group delay values and characteristic?

The other devices, AD1896 and ADAU145x/146x have the calculating formula for the ASRS's group delay.

It shows that the delay value changes depending on the input/output sampling rate.

But it looks that the low power codec’s group delay is much shorter than it.

  • Hi Euglena,

To answer your questions about the Group Delay of ADAU1777.

    • The Serial Port Sampling Rate for the fig 32 and fig 44 is 192KHz. The max that ADAU1777 supports for Serial Port sampling rate.
    • Unfortunately, we do not have any calculations listed for the group delay numbers on the Datasheet, but by plotting the Latency response comparing all the sample rates, we see that the Group Delay changes linearly with the sampling rate. Meaning, as we reduce the sample rate, Group Delay increases as can be seen in the ADAU1787 Datasheet figure 40.
    • ADAU1372 belongs to a different family of Codecs, it does not have a DSP, so it will have different Latency numbers than the other Codecs. However, ADAU1772 has 38usec Analog in Analog out Latency and ADAU1777, ADAU1787 have 5usec Analog in to Analog out latency as specified on the respective datasheets. To give an example, if compared ADAU1777 and ADAU1787, the Latency improvement of almost 15usec can be seen for SPTin to HPout Datapath on ADAU1787.

    I hope this helps.

  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I apologize that I could not find your response soon.

    I understand your explanations.

I measured the delay "ADC -> ASRC - Serial out - (loopback) -> Serial in -> ASRC -> DAC"

by connecting the serial output and input on the ADAU1777 board.

Then I could see that the delay values were close to data sheet plot, and the results corresponded with your comments.
