Is it necessary to solder the circular pad around the sound port of a MEMS microphone?
Yes, this pad needs to be soldered to the board. This is a ground pad for the microphone, so it needs to be electrically connected to ground on the PCB. The solder joint with this pad also forms an acoustic seal between the microphone's sound port and the hole in the PCB. An incomplete solder joint on this pad could degrade the acoustic performance of the system. See application note AN-1068 for recommendations on soldering MEMS microphones to your PCB.
