Yes, MAX40658 has been specifically designed to handle APD’s having lower input capacitance. If you look at the Typical Operating Characteristics on the datasheet, you can find that the 3dB bandwidth is going to be significantly affected by the input capacitance posed. When you add an external Schottky clamp, this will introduce additional input capacitance that will affect the 3dB bandwidth.
The MAX40658/MAX40659 has an internal input current clamp that clamps current at 100mA. Generally, 100mA is a high enough current limit for most applications. However, if your application requires a higher current limit, there will be a trade-off in order to keep the input capacitance minimum and not to lose the bandwidth versus increasing the current limit. You will have to compromise depending on which parameter is more important to your application.
