Reference Point when used as cell voltage monitor

Category: Hardware
Product Number: AD8479

Greetings,

If using the AD8479 to monitor cell voltage, does the reference of the IC need to be connected to the battery return line?  I have a battery with 24 cells in series.  I plan to use a differential voltage monitor on every cell.  If the ground of the sensing circuit is completely isolated from the battery circuit, will the AD8479 still accurately measure the differential voltage of the individual cells?

  • Greetings,

For optimal performance when using the AD8479 to monitor cell voltage, it is recommended to connect the reference of the IC to a stable ground reference, which could be the battery return line. This connection helps ensure accurate differential voltage measurements by providing a common reference point, which is crucial for common-mode rejection.

If the ground of the sensing circuit is completely isolated from the battery circuit, the AD8479 may not function accurately. The lack of a common reference point can lead to errors in the differential voltage measurement. To ensure accurate measurements, it is advisable to establish a common ground reference between the sensing circuit and the battery circuit.
