Discrete or integrated difference amplifier?

Why should I use one of ADI's integrated difference amplifiers (AD8276, AD8273), rather than building a discrete solution with an op-amp and four resistors?

  • There are many advantages of using one of ADI's difference amplifiers, primarily because of the precision, laser-trimmed resistors that are integrated on the same IC as the op-amp.

    Benefits include:

    • Superior common-mode rejection (which is dependent on the ratio-matching of the resistors, accomplished through precision wafer-level laser-trimming, with better results at a lower cost than discrete resistors).
    • Excellent gain accuracy (also dependent on resistor ratio-matching).
    • Lower temperature drift (resistors are on the same silicon, so are likely to be at the same temperature and drift evenly).
    • Integrated input ESD protection and over-voltage protection.
    • Less PCB space used.
    • Therefore, better performance at a lower cost...
