Detecting Single-Photon Pulses from Photodiodes

I'm trying to detect single-photon pulses from an avalanche photodiode (APD), Hamamatsu S14422.

Analog has a nice Photodiode Circuit Design Wizard.  I'm not sure of the parameters of the my APD or what the expected current from single pulses looks like.

I have been testing C13367-1350EA, which is an APD with an amplifier module.  The pulses from this module are in the 100mV range, 10ns in duration.  I don't know anything about the amplifier circuit in the module.

Does anyone have any app notes on interfacing to APDs, on detecting and squaring up the pulses of current that arise from single photons hitting the APD?
