LT2078 - Input Voltage AMR failure mechanism

Hello!

I need clarification on the AMR part of LT2078's datasheet. It says that differential voltage AMR is +-30v, but the input voltage AMR is up to supply voltage, i.e. the input cannot pass the positive supply voltage.

My question is, what happens if it does? I am talking about around 10v into the negative input while the supplies are 0v. Is the failure mechanism thermal, i.e. is it enough to limit the input current?

Any insight would be welcome.

Hi Sam64,

The Absolute Maximum Ratings specified in datasheets are not the operating point of the device. Instead it's the tolerable limits the device can handle and operating at this level may cause permanent damage to the device.

The scenario mentioned for LT2078 where the supply voltages are currently at 0V and a 10V input is introduced violates the absolute maximum rating which states that the input voltage should only be equal to the positive supply voltage, this leads to input overvoltage and may cause damage to the device.

Bottom line, Don't operate the device near or at the maximum ratings.
